Netflix expands Lat Am & India investment
Netflix is looking to expand Latin American investments, confirming it will host 50 new and returning original productions emerging from the region in 2018 and two new Indian originals.
During a Vive Netflix event in Mexico City, chief content officer Ted Sarandos said: “Local creatives are breaking the paradigms of what storytelling has traditionally looked like in Latin America.
“As part of our expanded investment in the region, we’re looking for innovators who are excited about redefining the boundaries of Latin American entertainment.”
The newest Spanish-language original production to join the slate will be Diablero, a horror fantasy thriller which will be filmed entirely in Mexico. It will be produced by Juan Gordon and Pedro Uriol.
Netflix’s continued investment in content extends to stand-up comedy specials, with 21 new comedians from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Brazil hitting Netflix throughout 2017 and 2018.
Diablero joins two earlier Spanish original shows commissioned by Netflix, including the Carlos Montero-created Elite.
The news marks a list of regional expansions that Netflix is currently working with. Today, Netflix also announced that it will be working with two original Indian series, Selection Day and Again.
Selection Day will be produced in partnership with Seven Stories, the UK-based production company of filmmakers Sharon Maguire (Bridget Jones’ Baby) and Anand Tucker (Leap Year). It is part of the All3Media group.
New Delhi-set Again is a female-led detective series written by Marisha Mukerjee.
