Nat Geo’s DiCaprio doc free on-demand and mobile
National Geographic will release Leonardo DiCaprio-produced eco-doc Before the Flood for free on numerous on-demand and mobile platforms, to coincide with its linear launch this weekend.
The film, which is produced by DiCaprio and exec produced by Martin Scorsese, seeks to put climate change high up the agenda ahead of the US presidential election.
It was released theatrically last week, and will hit the National Geographic US and international channels, across 145 countries and in 45 languages, on October 30.
It will also run, commercial free, on numerous on-demand and mobile services as the producers seek the widest possible audience for their message about climate change.
“There is no greater threat to the future of our society than climate change, and it must be a top issue for voters this election season,” said DiCaprio.
For a week starting October 30 the feature doc will also be available to stream on Nat Geo TV’s website, on cable service’s on-demand platforms and TV Everywhere apps.
It will also be on iTunes, Hulu, YouTube, Facebook and Sony’s PlayStation platform.
“At National Geographic, we believe in the power of storytelling to change the world, and this unprecedented release across digital and streaming platforms is not only a first for our network but also in our industry, underscoring how exceptional we think this film is and how passionate we are about it,” said Nat Geo boss Courteney Monroe.
“We are committed to ensuring as many people as possible see this film as we head into US elections.”
Before the Flood was recently screened at the White House and at the United Nations, where it was hosted by U.N. Secretary-General Ban-Ki-Moon with US secretary of state John Kerry participating in a Q&A session.
Nat Geo added that on its linear feed it will run a five-minute sneak peak of its much-anticipated Ron Howard drama doc Mars. It launches in November.
