PBS preps new kids services
PBS is launching a range of new kids offerings including a round-the-clock kids channel and a streamed version of the linear service.
The publicly funded US broadcaster said the 24/7 kids service will be available to its local affiliates later this year. As well as a linear digital channel there will be a live stream of the service.
The online version will be viewable via a dedicated PBS app or the PBS website.
There will be a stream of the live channel as well as on-demand episodes and clips from PBS shows from the service. Games will be added at a later date, PBS said.
All of the digital apps and services will be free of charge.
“Television continues to be the most widely used platform for children’s educational content, especially among low-income families,” said PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger.
“The new PBS Kids 24/7 channel and live stream offered by local member stations ensure that educational media is available to all families, all the time and via a platform that works for them.”
He added: “Given that 54% of all children nationwide do not have the opportunity to attend preschool, providing access is a critical element of our public service mission.”
Shows on the new PBS Kids service will include Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood (pictured), Odd Squad, Wild Kratts, Nature Cat and Dinosaur Train.
