Amazon’s Freevee finally serves up US version of ‘Friday Night Dinner’

Friday Night Dinners

Amazon AVOD service Freevee is expanding its originals with a remake of UK comedy, Friday Night Dinner.

The show will be titled Dinner With The Parents and is to be produced by ITV Studios-owned Big Talk Productions, which was behind the original, and CBS Studios.

The 10-parter will, as per the UK version, follow the lives of two brothers in their 20s who go to their parent’s for dinner each week.

Jon Beckerman is showrunner and exec produces with Big Talk’s Kenton Allen, Matthew Justice and Caroline Leddy. Robert Popper, who created the original, is also attached.

The UK show ran on Channel 4 for six seasons until last year, following the death of star Paul Ritter.

CBS was last attached to a remake in 2016, but the show didn’t make it through development. The US broadcaster had also tried to produce a US version in 2014, while NBC shot a pilot for the 2011-12 season.

For Amazon Freevee, meanwhile, the order underlines its ongoing commitment to the AVOD service and comes with news that It has extended The Lake into a second season. The streamer also announced a slew of new originals and pickups on existing shows, across both scripted and unscripted, in May.

A month earlier, Freevee revealed plans to grow its slate of originals by 70% and roll out in Germany later this year, as it rebranded from IMDb TV.
