UK retailer Currys launching TV and movies streaming service

UK consumer electronics retail chain Currys is launching a streaming video service under the Knowhow Movies brand.

Details of the new service are to be unveiled next week, although Currys is promising a range of titles from major studios as well as top TV shows, trailers and special bonus features.

Knowhow is Currys’ service brand, already used for delivery and installation of products as well as customer care and technical assistance.

Currys has already pre-installed links on the desktops of computers sold through its chain and on smart TVs. The chain is planning to offer movie rental and electronic sell-through of titles. Subscribers will be able to add multiple devices to their accounts, allowing them to continue watching the same movie on a TV, PC or tablet.

In addition to its own stores, Currys owns the PC World chain and the Dixons.co.uk online retail business in the UK.

Last year middleware provider Oregan won a contract to supply its Onyx browser software to Dixons’ Logik brand of TVs, enabling owners of Dixons’ Logik L23IPTV 23-inch LCD TV to access connected TV services via the internet.
