Disney XD adapts Big Hero 6

Kids channel Disney XD is adapting animated feature film Big Hero 6 for the small screen.

Production has begun on an animated series that will debut in 2017 on Disney XD platforms around the world.

This will be based on the Walt Disney Animation Studios movie of the same name, and come from Kim Possible creators Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley. Disney Television Animation is producing.

The original was adapted from Marvel comics, which The Walt Disney Company owns following its 2012 acquisition of Marvel Entertainment.

The series will pick up after the events of the movie, continuing the story of 14-year-old tech genius Hiro and his compassionate robot friend Baymax, as the former begins life as the new kid at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology.

“Our colleagues at Walt Disney Animation Studios have created a brilliant new world, inspired by Marvel, with vivid, unique characters,” said Disney Channels Worldwide president and chief creative officer Gary Marsh. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop these characters into a world class animated series – full of fun, action and the kind of endearing storytelling that only Mark, Bob – and Baymax – can deliver.”

The project reunites producers McCorkle and Schooley with Kim Possible colleague Nick Filippi, who will be executive producer and director.
