‘Succession’, ‘The Bear’ & ‘Beef’ clean up once again at Emmy Awards
HBO drama Succession, Hulu’s The Bear and Netflix’s Beef have once again emerged as awards darlings after scooping the majority of accolades between them at the 2023 Emmys.
Their wins come just days after the three shows dominated at the Golden Globes to take home the lion’s share of awards, with many of the accolades mirroring their wins there.
Succession, the Jesse Armstrong-created series centered around the Roy family, was named Outstanding Drama Series, with stars Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin winning Outstanding Lead Actress and Lead Actor in a Drama Series, respectively.
Director Mark Mylod picked up an Emmy for his work on the episode Connor’s Wedding, while Armstrong was awarded an accolade for writing the same episode, and Matthew Macfadyen won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, giving Succession six wins overall at the Emmys this year.
FX-produced comedy-drama The Bear, which follows a young award-winning chef who returns to his hometown to manage his dead brother’s sandwich shop, was named Outstanding Comedy Series. Show creator Christopher Storer took home two further trophies, one for his work writing the episode System and another for directing the episode Review.
The Bear star Jeremy Allen White won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, while Ayo Edebiri won Outstanding Supporting Actress in the same category, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach was awarded for Best Supporting Actor, giving the show six trophies and tying it for overall wins with Succession.
Beef, meanwhile, which follows a road rage incident that escalates into a long-running feud, won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, with stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun winning the Lead Actress and Lead Actor accolades in the same category.
Show creator Lee Sung Jin won the award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Anthology Series Or Movie for the episode The Birds Don’t Sing, They Screech In Pain, and another for directing the episode Figure Of Light, giving Beef five wins in total.
Outside of the three big winners of the year, Jennifer Coolidge took Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for HBO’s The White Lotus, while Quinta Brunson was named Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary on ABC.
Paul Walter Hauser won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology series or Movie for Black Bird on Apple TV+, while Niecy Nash-Betts won the same accolade for Supporting Actress for her role in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story for Netflix.
Meanwhile, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show With Trevor Noah won Outstanding Talk Series, while MTV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race won Outstanding Reality Competition Program. HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver was named Outstanding Scripted Variety Series.
