US horror powerhouses Blumhouse & Atomic Monster confirm merger

The Thing About Pam

US horror producers Blumhouse and Atomic Monster have formally combined forces, following a protracted merger process.

The two companies are no strangers to each other, working on upcoming supernatural movie Night Swim and M3GAN, which debuted last year.

The merger, details of which first surfaced in November 2022, will see Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster retaining their labels and autonomy over creative.

Blum confirmed the deal on X (fka Twitter), starting that “the preeminent homes for horror are now under one roof.” Blum is majority owner, with Wan and NBCUniversal parent Comcast holding the balance.

Both production companies are expected to increase output as a result of the deal, with Atomic Monster looking to move into unscripted and gaming, while Blumhouse will give the company more clout.

Atomic Monster will also be able to tap into Blumhouse’s operations in film and TV, as well as the company’s first-look pact with Universal Pictures.

Blumhouse has been behind shows including The Exorcist franchise and Halloween, while Atomic Monster’s founder Wan has worked on Aquaman and recent spin-off Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom.

The deal comes three months after Blumhouse trimmed its team, with its TV division’s president Chris McCumber exiting alongside a number of others. The TV arm has produced series including NBC’s The Thing About Pam, Welcome To The Blumhouse for Amazon and Showtime titles The Loudest Voice and The Good Lord Bird.
