Sony strikes global deals for ‘Twisted Metal’, ‘Winter King’ & ‘Ten Pound Poms’
A slew of international broadcasters and platforms have struck deals for Sony Pictures Television (SPT) series The Winter King, Twisted Metal and Ten Pound Poms as LA Screenings gets underway this week.
BeIN in the Middle East, SonyLIV in India and Stan in Australia have picked up The Winter King. Co-commissioned for ITVX in the UK and MGM+ in the US (as announced last week), the series is a “revisionist” take on Arthurian legend, based on the Warlord Chronicles book series by Bernard Cornwell.
Set in the fifth century, long before Britain was united, in a brutal land of warring factions and tribes, where lives were often fleeting, the series follows Arthur Pendragon as he evolves from outcast to legendary warrior and leader.
The series stars Iain De Caestecker as Arthur, alongside Eddie Marsan, Ellie James, Nathaniel Martello-White and Stuart Campbell.
Meanwhile, Twisted Metal has secured international sales to SonyLIV in India, TVNZ in New Zealand, Stan in Australia, BeIN in the Middle East, HBO & HBO Max in CEE and MNET’s Showmax, for sub-Saharan Africa.
Based on the PlayStation video game series, and making its world premiere on Peacock in the US on 27 June, the action-comedy series stars Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz and follows John Doe, a smart-ass milkman who talks as fast as he drives.
With no memory of his past, John gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make his wish of finding community come true, but only if he can survive an onslaught of savage vehicular combat.
OCS in France, SonyLIV in India and TVNZ in New Zealand have picked up Ten Pound Poms. Launching on BBC One in the UK and Stan in Australia on 14 May, the drama, produced by SPT-backed Eleven, follows one family as they arrive in Sydney to find that life down under is a far cry from what they were sold.
Mike Wald, EVP of distribution & networks at Sony Pictures Television, said: “At a time when everyone is looking for content that stands apart, clients acknowledge there is nothing else out there like Twisted Metal, and we are seeing a clear void in the market for a sweeping epic drama like The Winter King.
“We are looking forward to announcing more sales on those series imminently and to provide our clients an early look at some of the other projects in the pipeline.”
