Netflix to end ratings hit ‘La Casa De Papel’ after fifth season

Netflix is bringing the curtain down on Spanish-language ratings juggernaut La Casa De Papel (Money Heist) by ordering a fifth and final season of the drama.

The 10-episode run is again being showrun and exec produced by series creator Alex Piña, with his prodco Vancouver Media starting shooting from today. Filming of the show, which has become one of the streamer’s biggest hits, is taking place in Spain, Denmark and Portugal from today.

The series stars Úrsula Coberó, Álvaro Morte and Itziar Ituño among numerous others as a band of robbers led by a cunning professor who undertake daring raids. Miguel Ángel Silvestre and Patrick Criado have also been confirmed as new additions to the La Casa de Papel cast.

The show started out life on Spain’s Atresmedia, before Netflix snagged global rights and then extended the drama as it grew in popularity around the world.

Piña, who subsequently announced an overall deal with Netflix, said: “We’ve spent almost a year thinking about how to break up the band. How to put the Professor on the ropes. How to get into situations that are irreversible for many characters. The result is the fifth part of La Casa De Papel. The war reaches its most extreme and savage levels, but it is also the most epic and exciting season.”

The drama marked something of a watershed for Netflix, with the show becoming hugely popular globally – incuding in the US – despite being non-English language.

Following it success, the streamer established its first European production hub in Spain and ramped up its local originals. Most recently, it ordered a documentary about La Casa De Papel earlier this year.
