Irvine Welsh novel set for TV remake

An Irvine Welsh novel is set to get a television adaptation, marking the such development in the acclaimed author’s career.

Buccaneer Media has acquired rights to Welsh’s novel Crime, and is in Cannes searching for partners for the show, which will have the same name.

Actor Dougray Scott (My Week with Marilyn) is attached to the show in both starring and producing guises. He will be executive producer, along with Buccaneer founder Tony Wood and Nicola Larder, who co-created ITV noir Marcella.

Shooting in Miami, Dougray will play a detective inspector in the present day. The series will include flashback’s of the officer’s previous case in Edinburgh, Scotland, and includes themes such as drug addiction, corruption and the prosecution of child abusers.

Welsh, who Trainspotting and Filth novels were adapted for television, will work with his long-time screenwriting partner, Dean Cavanaugh, on Crime. He described the story as a “a classic journey from darkness into light”, adding that “despite the troubling subject matter” the show would be “uplifting”.
