Viki adds Malaysia scripted pack

International online video platform Viki has acquired nearly 100 hours of Malaysian scripted programming after a deal with Primeworks Distribution.

The Rakuten-owned site will now exclusively offer popular Malaysian titles such as I Miss You 200% (Rindu Awak 200%), drama series Ariana Rose, and season one of Autumn in My Heart.

The agreement marks the first time Viki has tapped a Malaysian content distributor for an international deal. Primeworks is the sales arm of Malaysia’s free-to-air broadcaster and producer Media Prima.

“Viki is uniquely positioned to deliver exciting new entertainment that may have a hard time finding international audiences to global viewers everywhere, thanks to our fan base of 40 million monthly users and our crowd-sourced subtitling in over 200 languages,” said Viki CEO Tammy H. Nam.

The news comes soon after Viki parent Rakuten made Jacinto Roca, CEO of Viki stablemate SVOD service Wuaki.tv, an executive officer with a remit to coordinate digital video operations in several regions.

This involves strategically aligning Wuaki with San Franscisco-based Viki and Japanese VOD service Showtime.
