Euro broadcaters buy Outlander

A raft of international broadcasters including HBO Netherlands and Viasat have acquired US drama series Outlander.

Sony Pictures Television distributes the series and has struck the sales deals, with several buyers in Latin America also buying the scripted series.

The series, based on Diana Gabaldon’s second book in the Outlander series, Dragonfly in Amber, was originally ordered by US premium cable net Starz, which recently greenlit a second season.

Viasat has acquired the series for its SVOD service Viaplay in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. HBO has picked it up in the Netherlands as has VRT in Belgium, RTE in Ireland and 365 in Iceland.

In Latin America, SVOD service Clarovideo has taken rights to Outlander for its 14 markets in the region, which include Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. It will launch it in mid-2015.

SPT has already sold Outlander to Foxtel in Australia and Chinese video platform Sohu. It said today that it has now shopped it to 87 territories in all.

The series is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining and Supply Company, Sony’s Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television.
