Netflix set to make Stranger Things happen again
Netflix is set to order a second season of its hit original drama Stranger Things.
The US streaming company’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, told the Guardian newspaper it would be “dumb not to” greenlight a second run of the show, which is now widely credited as the TV hit of the summer.
Sarandos did not elaborate, or confirm whether season two was officially greenlit, and Netflix did not respond to a request for comment.
Asked late last month whether a second series was on the cards, Sarandos said Netflix wanted to “let it breathe a little bit,” before making a call, but now appears to be committing to a new run of the show.
There are no ratings for the drama, set in 1983 Indiana and an homage to 1980s movies, as Netflix never breaks out numbers.
It has, however, registered strongly in the Parrot Analytics/TBI In Demand charts, recently placing above the likes of Narcos and Marvel’s Jessica Jones.
Parrot’s analysis of the most demanded digital originals, a measure that analyses viewing and social media mentions, puts Stranger Things as the biggest show in the US in recent weeks.
It is, according to Parrot, ranking some distance ahead of Orange is the New Black, Bojack Horseman, Marco Polo and House of Cards.
