Legendary buys YouTube channel Geek & Sundry
The digital arm of US feature film producer Legendary has acquired Geek & Sundry, the YouTube channel operator that counts Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress Felicia Day among its founders.
The acquisition, for an undisclosed amount, also see Legendary and Day enter an agreement to work together on new drama, unscripted and digital series.
Day and business partners Kim Evey and Sheri Bryant launched geek culture and lifestyle channel Geek & Sundry in 2012 as part of YouTube’s original channels push. It has 1.4 million YouTube subs and a branded channel on Hulu.
Legendary’s TV and digital division is run by former Warner Bros. exec Bruce Rosenblum and former Sony Pictures TV boss Michael Grindon was also brought into the business last year.
Rosenblum said: “Bringing Felicia and her stable of branded digital content to Legendary gives the Geek & Sundry properties access to our unique digital infrastructure and also brings us a step closer to expanding the Legendary brand beyond traditional media platforms.”
Day added: “As someone who’s been working in digital entertainment for eight years, I am excited to see my company grow with Legendary, and to be able to keep making award-winning content within the changing digital landscape.”
Under Rosenblum’s stewardship, Legendary has acquired Geek & Sundry, Nerdist and Asylum Entertainment.
