Nine Network, Movistar+ strike pre-sale deals for BBCS’s ‘Perfect Planet’

A Perfect Planet

Nine Network in Australia, Movistar+ in Spain and public broadcasters across the Nordics have all struck pre-sales deals for BBC Studios’ new blue chip natural history series A Perfect Planet.

The five-parter is produced by Silverback Films for BBC One in the UK and US partner Discovery, with China’s Tencent Penguin Pictures, ZDF in Germany, China Media Group’s CCTV9, France Télévisions and The Open University co-producing.

DR in Denmark, NRK in Norway and Sweden’s SVT have all boarded the show, along with HRT in Croatia, Czech TV, LRT in Lithuania, TVNZ, Friday! and United Media Group in Russia, and Slovenia’s RTVS.

The deals, which come ahead of MIPCOM next week and after the launch of virtual platform BBC Studios Connect, will also see BBC Earth channels across Africa, Asia, Canada, CEE, MEDME, Nordics and Poland premiering the series.

A Perfect Planet combines natural history and earth sciences to explain how the planet operates, exploring how the forces of nature – weather, ocean currents, solar energy and volcanoes – drive, shape and support Earth’s diversity of life.

Executive producers are Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey and the series producer is Huw Cordey. It was commissioned for BBC One by Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s chief content officer, and Jack Bootle, head of commissioning for natural history and science. Howard Swartz is executive producer on behalf of Discovery.

Paul Dempsey, president of global distribution for BBCS, said: “Appetite for authentic and engaging factual content is growing each year with the Planet series, in particular, connecting to audiences around the world. We are seeing increasingly younger audiences who are passionate about protecting the natural world coming to the genre, and I expect to see this continue with A Perfect Planet.”
