TBI’s 2024 Predictions: Nomsa Philiso, CEO of general entertainment, MultiChoice Group
2024 is set to be a pivotal year for the global content industry, so TBI has enlisted some of the biggest names in the business to share their thoughts on the major trends of the next 12 months and how they’re going to capitalise on them.
Here, Nomsa Philiso, CEO of general entertainment at South Africa’s MultiChoice Group, highlights the importance of hyper-local content, the returning demand for sitcoms and predicts more acquisitions in the year ahead.
What is the biggest growth area for your company this year?
In 2023 I told you that we were doubling down on our OTT offering and this will continue to be our focus. Over the past year we’ve seen a 9% YOY increase in local content production. Key to this success is our regional presence across Africa and building on our hype- local approach and local languages. Our content offering and annual investment across the continent sets us apart from our competitors.
What is the key trend going to be in 2024?
We see people getting back into lighthearted content and that the television cycle is shifting back to content such as sitcoms that is easily consumed and offers cozy home viewing.
What is your New Year’s resolution and why?
In this attention economy my New Year’s resolution is to be more efficient with my time. Focusing on things that drive impact, prioritizing purpose over busyness.
What will be the biggest headline (not involving your own company) in 2024 and why?
I believe we will see more headlines involving acquisitions, and possibly unexpected partnerships in the film and television landscape.
What show are you most looking forward to in 2024?
Internationally I look forward to House Of The Dragon, season two, and the quirky farce from Australia C*A*U*G*H*T, starring Sean Penn. Locally we will be building on the success of our epic drama Shaka Ilembe that starred Nomzamo Mbatha, and the relaunch of Showmax will reveal incredible titles to entice, surprise and delight our subscribers.
