Netflix set to remain biggest platform as global SVOD subs to hit 1.79 billion by 2029
Global SVOD subscriptions will increase by 321 million between 2023 and 2029 to reach 1.79 billion, according to a new report from Digital TV Research.
The US will lead the way in terms of growth, adding 30 million subscriptions, followed by India, up by 27 million, and Brazil, increasing 23 million.
Furthermore, six US-based platforms will have a combined 946 million SVOD subscribers globally by 2029, up from 751 million in 2023. These platforms will collectively increase their subscriber bases by 196 million worldwide.
The Crown streamer Netflix will remain the largest single platform, adding 44 million subscribers between 2023 and 2029 to take its total to 298 million. Disney+ will have more than 100 million subscribers fewer than Netflix, with significantly less investment and take-up in the Asia Pacific region, said the report, which was written with the assumption that Indian service Hotstar will remain part of Disney.
Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Platforms now measure their success through their profitability. This means that already-profitable Netflix will benefit more than its US-based competitors.”
