Germany will have more SVOD subscriptions than the UK by the end of this year, with the gap between the two countries growing from then on, according to research revealed today.

Western Europe is forecast to have 273 million SVOD subscriptions by 2029, up from 210 million by end-2023, with the data coming from Digital TV research’s new Western Europe OTT TV & Video Forecasts Report.

From the 63 million additions, the UK will contribute six million, Germany 12 million, Spain 9 million, Italy 10 million and France 11 million.

Global streamers have been vying with incumbents such as RTL Group’s RTL+ to entice subscribers, with US-based entrants such as Netflix taking Love Is Blind into the country and Disney+ ordering Pauline from Cologne-based prodco Bildundtonfabrik.

The latter commission came ahead of the launch of the first Disney+ original for Germany, Sam: A Saxon, which was first revealed in 2021.
