Netflix launches HBO’s ‘Insecure’ in US following Warner Bros. Discovery licensing deal
Netflix has launched HBO show Insecure in the US following its recent licensing deal with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), which will see a range of scripted series distributed by the rival streamer.
HBO shows Ballers, Band Of Brothers, The Pacific and Six Feet Under will also become available on Netflix via the deal, while True Blood, which has been streaming on Hulu in the US, will be shown on the streamer’s service internationally.
News of the WBD/Netflix deal first emerged last month, following Warner Bros. Discovery’s boss David Zaslav talking up the importance of licensing shows to third parties.
US studios have now all but ditched the previous ‘walled garden’ strategy of retaining all content for their owned streamers, with UK broadcaster Channel 4 recently buying Disney shows and Foxtel in Australia extending its pact with WBD.
WBD consolidated its own key streaming services, HBO Max and discovery+ into a single combined offering, Max, in May, in a move described by president and CEO, global streaming and games JB Perrette as an attempt to “simplify and improve the experience for consumers” after an “era of peak confusion”.
