Show of the Week: Blind Duets
Musical competition format with an element of mystery, in which four celebrity singers form a jury panel and perform alongside 12 contestants, whose identities are hidden, in a bid to uncover their star talents.
Hailing from Global Agency, and created by company co-founder Gila Kantar, Blind Duets hides contestants inside on-stage cabinets as they perform a short part of their chosen song while remaining anonymous – before getting the chance to sing alongside a star.
“Making people’s dreams come true always gets a good reaction on TV, says Kantar of the show. “It creates great emotions. We shouldn’t forget that watching a celebrity perform a duet with an unknown singer creates great excitement. Those taking part will share not just a song but an experience of a lifetime. These powerful elements helped us create Blind Duets.”
Each member of the celebrity jury chooses one of the mystery singers following their performance to join them for a duet, without knowing for sure whose voice belong to whom. As they take to the stage alongside the stars to sing, the performance is scored by the audience, while the jury competes among themselves to pick the best singers for their team.
At the end of the show, the jury member whose mystery singers have the highest score will perform once again – with the audience choosing the best among them to take home a cash prize.
“The surprise element is the key factor in this format,” explains Kantar. “Our celebrity coaches gamble on the contestants without knowing the contestants’ identity or vocal talent. Keeping the identities secret until the end adds to the show’s mystery. This keeps the audience hooked until the end of the show.”
Kantar adds that the big appeal of the show is that “everything happens spontaneously.” She explains: “The contestants and celebrity coaches have never met before and most importantly, they’ve never had a chance to rehearse.
“In other words, the moment they meet on stage is the peak moment for both the contestants and the viewers. We witness whether they’ll achieve great harmony or not.”
