ITV & ITVX extend format reboot trend to return ‘Deal Or No Deal’ to UK

Deal Or No Deal

ITV in the UK is extending the country’s trend for format reboots, this time with a new version of gameshow Deal Or No Deal.

The format first launched in 2002 in the Netherlands and travelled to the UK in 2005 via Channel 4, where it aired until 2016.

It is now being revived by ITV and streamer ITVX, with Banijay UK firm Remarkable Entertainment producing.

The show will take place in “a brand-new setting and with brand-new prize boxes”, with Stephen Mulhern attached to host.

The format sees a contestant confronted with 22 sealed boxes, each one hiding a different amount of money. Without knowing what each one contains, the contestant must eliminate the boxes, which are opened one at a time, and the amount of money inside is revealed.

The show has been commissioned by Katie Rawcliffe, head of entertainment commissioning, and Joe Mace, commissioning editor for entertainment, with Remarkable’s joint MD’s Tamara Gilde and Cat Lawson producing.

Rawcliffe said: “Deal Or No Deal is such an iconic format and we are delighted that it will be joining the ITV family. Stephen’s infectious warmth and wit mixed with his natural rapport with members of the public is the perfect combination for this much-loved TV series.”

It is not the first veteran Banijay format to be rebooted by ITV, which is also behind a new version of Big Brother and a Stephen Fry-fronted version of US classic Jeopardy. The BBC, meanwhile, has recently revived formats including Survivor and Gladiator.
