Netflix preps ‘Gears Of War’ adaptation as streamer doubles down on video game IP

Gears Of War

Netflix is doubling down on its video game adaptations with an animated series and film remake of Gears Of War.

The Xbox game, which launched in 2006, will be turned into a live-action film and an adult-focused animation by the streamer and the game’s developer, The Coalition.

The streamer has become increasingly reliant on video game IP for its originals, with shows such as vampire series Castlevania and the upcoming Sonic Prime set to launch next month.

It also ordered a short-lived remake of Resident Evil, which was cancelled after one season, and in May confirmed a deal with Sony’s Playstation for shows based on its Horizon franchise.

No producers are yet attached to the Gears Of War adaptation, but it is not the first time the IP has been earmarked for adaptation.

New Line Pictures initially took rights more than a decade ago to create a movie based on the game, while Universal also explored a remake, but neither made it to screen.

Gears Of War requires players to battle against underground creatures that threaten the future of humankind. It has spawned six instalments and numerous spin-offs.
