Ample & Fremantle track Billy McFarland on follow-up doc ‘After The Fyre’

Billy McFarland

LA-based Ample Entertainment has tied with Fremantle on a documentary that follows infamous Fyre Festival founder and convicted felon Billy McFarland after his release from prison.

After The Fyre will accompany McFarland as he re-emerges in the outside world after serving four years of his six-year prison sentence and launches his next business venture in an attempt to pay back the $26m he still owes after the botched luxurious music event that took place in 2017.

The doc, which has started principal photography, will pick up where both Netflix’s Fyre and Hulu’s Fyre Fraud docs left off in early 2019, as they competed for viewers and global headlines.

After The Fyre is being directed by Ample’s co-founders Ari Mark and Phil Lott, who recently worked with Adam McKay on HBO’s The Invisible Pilot and Discovery+ show Queen Of Versailles Reigns Again. The upcoming slate includes Netflix’s natural-history film Kangaroo Valley and several unannounced series with Roku, Discovery+ and History.

Fremantle has been expanding its factual output over the past two years months, launching a new production arm in Spain in 2021 with the head of non-fiction at Movistar+, Fernando Jerez, and hiring Chang in May of that year.

The company has also launched UFA Documentary in Germany and partnered with Anonymous Content on beauty queent pageant show, Mrs. America.
