Show of the Week: The Invisible Girl

The Invisible Girl

Based on the young adult book trilogy of the same name by Blue Jeans, this Spanish thriller takes place in Cárdena, a sleepy town in the Andalusia region.

Teenager Julia and her father, police lieutenant Miguel Ángel, have recently moved here, after her mother unexpectedly passed. But the town’s peace is suddenly interrupted, when one day, tragedy strikes: 17-year-old Aurora, the local high school’s ‘invisible girl’, is brutally murdered during the town’s summer fair.

Despite her father’s warnings, Julia cannot idly sit by and do nothing. She starts her own investigation, using her gift of seeing more than meets the eye. Little by little, Julia discovers that everyone is hiding secrets, everyone seems guilty, and everyone is a suspect.

“The small, fictitious town of Cárdena and its inhabitants resemble issues of our society,” explains Andreas Khevenhueller-Metsch, Beta Films’ VP of international sales & acquisitions.

“In this microcosm, we can see the clash of young versus old, progress versus tradition, outsiders versus winners, and, last but not least, the fight for justice between good and evil play out. At the same time, this close-knit group of people where everyone knows each other, brings a certain kind of unease – there is a killer among them.”

Khevenhueller-Metsch expects this 8 x 60-minute series to hold significant international appeal, especially following the popularity of the original 2018 novel La Chica Invisible, which was “an instant bestseller in the Spanish-speaking world” and went on to become the first of a trilogy.

“A hit, especially among younger readers, it ticks all the right boxes to be adapted for television and to travel the world as a high-end series.”
