Disney+ orders ‘Ndrangheta-focused Italian true crime docuseries

Disney+ has greenlit Ndrangheta, World Wide Mafia, a new Italian original docuseries about public prosecutor Nicola Gratteri and his fight against the ‘Ndrangheta crime organisation.

Produced by Disney, alongside Italy’s IBC Movie and France’s Sunset Presse, the four-part series is written and directed by Jacques Charmelot and François Chayé and follow the historic Maxi-Trial that began in January 2021 in Lamezia Terme in Calabria, led by Gratteri against more than 350 defendants – a trial that will have major consequences on international drug trafficking.

Gratteri has received multiple death threats for many years and for half of his life he has been living under police protection. The series will reveal his personal story and the daily reality of his fight.

Francesca Andreoli and Maurizio Feverati are executive producing for IBC, while Carlos Carvalho Da Silva, Stéphanie de Montvalon and David Tillier are exec producing for Sunset Presse. Giovanni Filippetto and Michela Gallio are also writing alongside Charmelot and Chayé.

The commission comes as part of Disney+’s increased focus on telling European stories, with the Mouse House recently announcing that it is expecting to produce 60 originals from the region by 2024, up from its previously announced 50.
