Exclusive: YouTube unveils talent docs with ‘White Helmet’ prodco
YouTube has launched three new 20-minute documentaries exploring the lives of three of its creatives as part of the AVOD’s original programming strategy.
The shows are part of the streamer’s Creator Spotlights franchise and focus on UK female talents, including gaming & entertainment content creator Yammy, comedian ClickForTaz and beauty blogger Saffron Barker.
Each will see the YouTube talents revealing a “never-before-seen side of themselves” to subscribers, with Alana McVerry, Emma Jones and Frankie Fathers respectively filming, producing and directing Yammy, Taz and Saffron’s shows.
The series have been produced with Grain Media, the UK prodco which has been behind BAFTA-winning doc Learning To Skateboard In A Warzone (If You Are A Girl) and Netflix’s The White Helmets. Anna Murphy and Adam Mitchenall at Grain exec produce, with Victoria Jaye, YouTube Originals creative executive for EMEA.
The docs will also explore subjects including mental health, family and disability, with the aim of raising awareness and helping others who may be in similar situations.
Yammy said her doc would reveal details of her family life, including the identity of her son, while Taz will discuss her challenging teenage years and Saffron – who was born hard of hearing – will delve into the issues surrounding hearing loss.
Jaye said: “For the UK’s first Creator Spotlights series, we wanted to celebrate the rich diversity of female creators on YouTube and work with the finest female directors to bring these stories to life for viewers. We’re thrilled with how Yammy, Taz and Saffron embraced this creative opportunity and, working closely with the team at Grain, produced three very different, highly personal films.”
