Netflix orders Matt Groening toon Disenchantment
Netflix has ordered twenty episodes of new Matt Groening animated comedy Disenchantment.
The new adult-skewed series will premiere on Netflix ten episodes at a time, starting in 2018 and marking the first time SVOD service Netflix has worked with The Simpsons creator Groening.
Disenchantment follows the misadventures of hard-drinking princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci.
The animated comedy is produced by The ULULU Company, with Matt Groening and Josh Weinstein (The Simpsons, Futurama) serving as executive producers.
It will feature the voice talents of Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson (as Bean), Nat Faxon and Eric Andre, among others. The animation will be done by Futurama studio Rough Draft Studios.
Groening said: “Ultimately, Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”
“Matt Groening’s brilliant work has resonated with generations around the world and we couldn’t be happier to work with him on Disenchantment,” said Cindy Holland, VP of original content for Netflix. “The series will bear his trademark animation style and biting wit, and we think it’s a perfect fit for our many Netflix animation fans.”
In November last year, Groening’s seminal cartoon The Simpsons was renewed for 29th and 30th seasons, meaning it will overtake Gunsmoke as the scripted series with the most episodes.
