Netflix talks up exclusive movies, Disney deal

Netflix has started talking up its movie partnership with Disney ahead of the agreement taking effect later this year.

The Disney-Netflix deal was actually announced back in 2012, but only takes effect later this year.

The agreement gives the streaming service exclusive first pay window rights to Disney fare, in turn taking this content away from premium cabler Starz.

“From September onwards, Netflix will become the exclusive US pay TV home of the latest films from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar,” Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said on the official Netflix blog.

Netflix has been criticised in some quarters for a perceived lack of depth in the movies offering on its US service and to highlight

Sarandos seemingly sought to address these concerns in his blog post, noting a focus on exclusive features.

“Many of our long time US members might recognise that summer is a time when we refresh a large part of our film catalogue,” he wrote.

“This year is no exception, but there is one difference; a batch of non-exclusive titles are leaving while what is arriving is exclusive to Netflix among streaming subscription video services.”
