Futuristic drama original for Netflix
Netflix has gone for a ten-part sci-fi drama based on 2002 book Altered Carbon.
The series, which has the same name, comes from Skydance Television and Shutter Island screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis.
Richard K. Morgan’s original novel is set in the 25th century and is set in a world where the human mind has been digitised, with souls transferrable from one body to another. It follows an imprisoned interstellar warrior trying to solve a murder and gain a new life on Earth.
Kalogridis is writer, executive producer and showrunner. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross also exec-produce.
The pick-up comes after the streaming giant Netflix commissioned Gypsy, a Latino reboot of One Day at a Time, and Haters Back Off, a series from YouTuber Miranda Sings.
Netflix this week vowed to spend US$6 billion on content this year, as it posted more strong financial and subscriber numbers.
