Netflix launches movie slate
Idris Elba child soldier movie Beasts of No Nation will be the first Netflix original movie to roll out when it launches on the streaming service around the world on October 16.
The film comes from True Detective director Cary Fukunaga and is based on Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala’s novel about a child soldier
Netflix is aggressively moving into features, announcing several projects including projects from Brad Pitt, Pee-wee Herman and Sandler among others.
Adam Sandler’s comedy Western The Ridiculous Six will follow Beasts of No Nation and launch in December. The streaming service has a deal for four Sandler movies in all.
It will be followed by Crouching Tiger follow-up Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend in the first quarter of 2016. It will roll out on Netflix and theatrically. Pee-wee’s Big Holiday will follow in March 2016.
Netflix’s movie move has shaken up the movie business with theatre chains among those resisting the move. Netflix, meanwhile, has said the movie windowing system is outdated.
Its original films will launch in the US and on its growing number of international services as it continues its global roll out.
Upcoming features include War Machine, Hollywood A-lister Brad Pitt’s latest movie.
