Netflix and Brad Pitt creating War Machine

Netflix has made its most aggressive move into full-length feature films yet with a deal to exclusively produce and show War Machine, Hollywood A-lister Brad Pitt’s latest movie.

Netflix sent shockwaves through the feature film world when it announced its original content drive was being extended to movies, criticising the current movie windowing model in the process.

Yesterday, the SVOD giant made its biggest original movie deal yet, joining forces with Pitt’s Plan B for War Machine, a satirical comedy based on the Michael Hastings novel The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan.

War Machine follows a four-star, “rock star” general whose lethal reputation and impeccable track record vaults him to command the American war in Afghanistan.

“We are so excited to be a part of the inspiring commitment by Netflix to produce cutting-edge content and to deliver it to a global audience” said Pitt.

Shooting on the film starts in August. Pitt will take the lead role, while David Michôd (The Rover) is signed on to direct.

“War Machine is a rip-roaring, behind-the-facade tale of modern war decision-makers, from the corridors of power to the distant regions of America’s ambitions,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “Brad and David are a perfect team to make this timely, compelling and entertaining film.”
