Amazon Studios originals land with Sony
Sony Pictures Television will sell Amazon Studios-produced originals internationally, TBI has learned.
SPT already sells Netflix’s original series House of Cards and the Amazon deal positions it as the distributor of choice for the SVOD platforms.
Amazon has commissioned a raft of original programming, which it tests in pilot form with Amazon customers before launching on the Prime Instant Video streaming service in the US and its counterpart in the UK and Ireland, Lovefilm.
Its first wave of series included Amazon Studios-produced John Goodman political comedy Alpha House (pictured left) and tech start-up comedy Betas (pictured below), which rolled out at the end of last year. Sony and Amazon declined to comment, but TBI understands that SPT will handle sales to broadcasters in international markets. There are no confirmed sales of the shows yet.
Amazon has just released its second wave of pilots and where distribution rights are not tied-up, with for example Red Arrow distributing cop series Bosch, SPT is expected to shop the Amazon Studios shows internationally.
The studio’s programme sales arm has sold House of Cards to buyers including Sky Deutschland, Canal+ in Spain, Zon in Portugal, Digiturk in Turkey and Be-TV in Belgium. It will also sell the second season of the series, which launches on Netflix today (February 14) and the recently commissioned third season.
