BBC adds time-shifted flagship net

The BBC has unveiled a new time-shifted +1 channel for its flagship BBC One network.

BBC director general Tony Hall announced BBC One +1 today, saying:  “Any plan for channels starts with BBC One. Above all, BBC One needs to be on top form. It has to be the nation’s favourite channel, but also its bravest. We’ll also look to launch a BBC One +1 channel, too – it’s what audiences expect, especially younger ones, and it means people can get more of what they’ve already paid for.”

No details on when the service will launch or what platforms it will be distributed through were provided but will follow at a later date.

BBC One programming is already available time-shifted on web TV service YouView’s backward EPG but this is the first time it has launched a time-shifted linear net.

The news puts BBC One in line with rivals ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, which all have time-shifted offerings.

Outlining his vision for the BBC, Hall yesterday said he planned to put the BBC iPlayer at the centre of the pubcaster’s plans going forward as it attempts to become a leading digital media organisation.
