Cartoon Network to launch two new animated series
US kids broadcaster Cartoon Network has ordered two new animated series from its own development studio.
The Turner-owned network has commissioned Steven Universe and Uncle Grandpa. Both shows are expected to debut in 2013.
Steven Universe was created by Adventure Time writer and storyboard artist Rebecca Sugar. It tells the story of Steven, the youngest member of a team of magical Guardians of the Universe.
Meanwhile, Uncle Grandpa, which was created by Secret Mountain Fort Awesome creator Pete Browngardt, follows the magical Uncle Grandpa.
Both series were conceived as part of Cartoon Network Studios shorts development initiative.
“Steven Universe and Uncle Grandpa will build upon our record-breaking streak with original programming, and further define the voice for Cartoon Network Studios comedies,” said Cartoon Network chief content officer Rob Sorcher. “Rebecca and Pete represent our next generation of homegrown talent, following Pen Ward and JG Quintel who set a high bar with their distinctive visual storytelling and unique comedic styles.”
