Sony to produce Colombian telenovela
Sony is ramping up its production business in Latin America after striking a deal with Colombian broadcaster Caracol to produce a 90x1hour telenovela.
The Latin American arm of the Hollywood studio is to produce Los Tiempos de la Violencia (The Times of Violence) in association with Caracol, which will be a coproduction partner.
The show, which stars El Cartel de los Sapos’ Diana Hoyos and La Traicon’s Salvador del Solar, chronicles the lives of a champion boxer and a 1950’s feminist leader as they fall in love.
Sony Pictures Television and Caracol Television will share international distribution rights.
Sony has found recent success in the region with a number of coproductions including teen novela Isa TKM (Te Quiero Mucho) and also acquired a 50% stake in Colombian producer Teleset last year.
Caracol has also been expanding its international production business; the company, which is best known for producing Sin Tetas No Hay Paradiso (Without Breasts There Is No Paradise), struck an output deal with US Spanish language broadcaster Telemundo earlier this year that will see it offer around 4,000 hours of content per year as well as its library of 10,000 hours of novelas and series to the NBC Universal-owned network.
