Virgin Media snags NBCU content for VOD service
Virgin Media has inked a deal with NBC Universal for a slew of its TV content. The NBCU shows will be available on the UK cabler’s video-on-demand service from the start of December.
The agreement with NBC Universal International Television Distribution gives Virgin Media shows including House, Heroes, The Office (US) and 30 Rock. All will be available in HD. They will be available on-demand on TV, online and on mobile devices.
The cable company has already inked VOD content deals with Warner Bros. and CBS Studios among others.
Virgin Media recently said that over 60% of its subs use its VOD service once a week or more. The MSO claims that the iPlayer catch-up service, which is available over Virgin’s cable system, has driven VOD usage as had interest in kids content, transactional services and scripted series.
It says the VOD service is now the fifth most popular ‘channel’ across its whole service. In September it added a 3D component to the VOD service.
