DCD seals deals for Last Chance to See and other factual shows
Several broadcasters have picked up Stephen Fry fronted factual series Last Chance to See. UK-based distributor DCD has also shopped a raft of its other factual titles around the world following MIPCOM with 45 Stone Virgin, Child Frozen in Time and Half Ton Son all travelling.
Last Chance to See has been acquired by ABC (Australia), Sky (New Zealand), NRK (Norway) and UKTV (UK). The 6x60mins factual series follows Fry and Mark Carwardine as they track down animals that are close to extinction. Airing on BBC2 in the UK, a clip of Carwardine and a rare Kakopo bird has had over one million hits on YouTube in the two weeks it has been on the website.
DCD has also closed deals for several other factual titles including 45 Stone Virgin. The show, which was the most popular documentary of the year so far on US cable network TLC, follows a 45 stone man who sheds 28 stone and becomes a fitness instructor. It has been picked up by RTL (Netherlands), Discovery Europe, Ten (Australia), MTV3 (Finland), NRK (Norway), TVNZ (New Zealand) and Viasat (Denmark and Sweden).
One-off doc Child Frozen in Time, also originally for TLC in the US, meanwhile, has been acquired by broadcasters including RTL (Netherlands), Nine (Australia) and Yes (Israel). The show looks at the life of Brooke Greenberg, a sixteen-year-old who has a rare genetic condition meaning he resembles a 7 month old baby.
Finally, Half Ton Son, about the world’s heaviest teenager, has been taken by several broadcasters including RTL (Belgium) and Nippon (Japan).
