Wolf Creek remake is Stan’s debut original
Australian SVOD platform Stan is getting into the originals game by working up a pair of drama series.
The first is Wolf Creek, an adaptation of the Australian horror film that’s now in development, while the other is titled Enemies of the State.
The news comes just weeks before Netflix enters the Australian market, and follows recent local news reports suggesting various subscription on-demand platforms in the territory are preparing original content.
Nick Forward, Stan’s director of content and product, said: “Original productions have always been part of Stan’s programming plans. Before we move to the commissioning stage, we are thrilled to be working with such talented local writers and producers to kick off the development slate.”
Wolf Creek will see John Jarratt, who played the movie’s antagonist, returning to play his role.
Movie creator Greg McLean is working on the series with Banijay Group-owned producer Screentime, with Underbelly alums Peter Gawler, Felicity Packard and Greg Haddrick attached as writer/producer, writer and executive producer, respectively.
“Wolf Creek and the character of Mick Taylor [Jarratt] have become household names, and the opportunity to tell a rich and complex story in his world in a high-quality drama series is a thrilling creative opportunity.”
Stan is also developing Enemies of the State, which comes from the production team behind ABC comedy legal drama Rake.
The show is based on the life of 20th century Australian politician Lionel Murphy. Peter Duncan is writer and producer, with Tony Jones, Robert Connolly and Ian Collie also attached.
“Tony Jones, Robert Connolly and I are bringing to life one of the great untold stories of Australian political drama,” said Duncan.
Stan launched on January 25 as a joint venture between Nine Network parent Nine Entertainment Company and publisher Fairfax Media.
