European Commission sets animation growth plan
The European Commission has set an animation growth plan for the economic region that looks to support talent and gain global reach.
The European Animation Plan has three objectives for the next five years: to foster the global reach and appeal of EU animation; to make Europe an inviting place to work for European talent and those from further afield; and make access to financing easier.
These objectives were reached after a series of workshops organised by the Commission with partners such as Cartoon Forum, Animation in Europe and MIFA, the Annecy festival.
While there is a strong portfolio of work for European animation, which includes TV series such as Peppa Pig and Mouk, as well as feature films such as Gnomeo and Juliet and Paddington, the industry faces challenges and still needs to future-proof, as the plan notes.
Broadcasters, for example, are traditionally the biggest investors in animation, but they face increasing threat from online platforms such as Netflix so must position themselves to benefit from the digital shift. To that end, the BBC recently set aside a multi-million pound pot for digital projects for its kids offering.
Europe must also focus on harboring talent in the region, according to the plan, as many key industry players are placed outside Europe.
Lastly, monestising content is increasingly difficult with many OTT players not offering clear pathways to financing for projects. Projects, therefore, must be further supported in the region.
“A solid culture of collaboration between animation studios and between different disciplines across the animation industry has laid a solid foundation for this booming industry. However, there is scope for more communication, for community building and for still more success stories,” the plan states.
Discussions between partners will continue to ensure development and support in the industry, according to the plan.
