Donald Trump suing Univison
Donald Trump is suing Univision after the US Spanish-language network decided to terminate its business relationship with the entrepreneur in the wake of his controversial comments about Mexican immigrants.
Trump is now reportedly suing Univision for reneging on its deal for the Miss USA and Miss World pageants, which Trump part owns.
The Trump Organization said Univision’s actions amount to an attempt to suppress freedom of speech: “Under the contract, Univision is required to broadcast the pageant live on television in Spanish. While Univision claims its decision came solely in response to comments by Mr. Trump during a June 16 campaign speech announcing his candidacy for President of the United States, the decision was, in reality, a politically motivated attempt to suppress Mr. Trump’s freedom of speech under the First Amendment as he begins to campaign for the nation’s presidency.”
Univision said it will contest any lawsuit. “We will not only vigorously defend the case, but will continue to fight against Mr. Trump’s ongoing efforts to run away from the derogatory comments he made on June 16th about Mexican immigrants,” it said in a statement.
US broadcast net NBC has also severed ties with Trump in the wake of his comments on immigration and will not now show any Miss World pageants. The Miss World Organization said its events will go on, despite the Univision and NBC blows, which leave it struggling for TV coverage.
It said: “It is unfortunate that recent events beyond our control have only served to negatively impact the women who participate in the pageant, our state directors, our sponsors and our fans. We want our supporters to know we remain committed to them and we will be conducting the pageant, regardless of the current situation.”
