Quickflix to offer HBO series soon after US broadcast
Australian on demand platform Quickflix has scored a significant agreement with HBO that will allow it offer series such as Game of Thrones soon after their US broadcast.
To this point, the only way to access premium HBO shows in Australia soon after their stateside bow was through Apple iTunes and pay TV market leader Foxtel.
The deals means users will be able to download or stream the shows on a number of different devices (up to five registered devices) but only on a transactional basis. They will not be part of Quickflix’s subscription content package.
Last year, HBO paid around US$10 million to take a 15.7% stake in Quickflix, a deal that came soon after a licensing agreement for about 500 hours of HBO library content. However, Quickflix has since been hit with staff cuts, financial difficulties and boardroom turmoil, which culminated in CEO Chris Taylor resigning in November.
Company founder Stephen Langsford has since picked up the reins and Quickflix will view the HBO agreement has significant forward step.
