NBC gives greenlight to ‘Destination X’ in the US
Adventure reality competition series Destination X has been given the official greenlight by NBC in the US.
The show, which was co-commissioned by NBCUniversal (NBCU) and UK pubcaster the BBC a year ago, is a Belgian format, created by Geronimo, following 10 contestants as they embark on the road trip of a lifetime, but have no idea of their location.
In order to win, they must figure out their mystery locations. Once they’re on the blacked-out Destination X bus, the journey transforms into a real-life game board, with challenges designed to offer clever clues as to their location, along with a few misdirects to keep them guessing.
ITV Studios-owned Twofour, which restructured its content teams earlier this month, will produce both versions of the series for the US and UK. The NBC version will be co-produced with Universal Television Alternative Studio.
Production will begin later this year. Both the US and UK versions of the series will be filmed in tandem, with plans to launch in 2025 across NBC and BBC One & iPlayer.
Destination X is distributed globally by Be-Entertainment, while Geronimo, which has previously been behind titles including The Big Job Switch and Doctor Davy, launched the format on VTM in Belgium in February 2023.
The title has since sold to M6 in France, ProSieben in Germany and RTL4 in the Netherlands, alongside NBC and the BBC.
“Destination X is one of the most unique and innovative formats we’ve seen in a long time, and it’s so big we partnered with the BBC again to shoot two shows at once,” said Corie Henson, EVP of unscripted programming, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming.
