Netflix & Tyler Perry extend pact with first-look series deal

Netflix is extending its ongoing creative partnership with producer and filmmaker Tyler Perry with the addition of a multi-year first-look series deal.

The first series announced under the new deal is Beauty In Black, a 16 x 60-minute drama, written, directed, and produced by Perry.

Beauty In Black follows two women leading very different lives. While Kimmie is struggling to make a living after her mother kicked her out and Mallory is running a successful business, they find themselves entangled in each other’s lives.

Angi Bones, president of original programming and Tyler Perry Studios and Tony Strickland, EVP of studio production and operation at the firm, will also produce.

The first-look series deal comes just a few months after Perry and Netflix struck a a multi-year first-look film deal, under which Perry is to write, direct and produce a slate of feature films for the streamer.

Perry’s upcoming films with Netflix include Six Triple Eight starring Kerry Washington and Mea Culpa starring Kelly Rowland. His previous films with the streamer include A Jazzman’s Blues, A Madea Homecoming and A Fall from Grace.
