BBC expands ‘The Traitors’ offering with US, Australian & New Zealand acquisitions
UK pubcaster the BBC has acquired the Australian and New Zealand versions of Dutch reality format The Traitors, along with the second season of the US version, for VOD service BBC iPlayer.
The acquisition comes just days after the second season of the UK version came to an end on BBC One and iPlayer. Season two of The Traitors Australia launches on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer today, with season one of The Traitors New Zealand and season two of The Traitors US to join later in the year.
Originally created in the Netherlands by All3Media-backed IDTV for RTL4., the format sees a group of strangers come together to complete a series of challenges with the objective of earning a cash prize. However, some contestants will be coined traitors whilst the others are faithfuls. The traitors will have to steal the prize from the others and eliminate fellow contestants without being found out.
Dan McGolpin, director, BBC iPlayer & channels, said: “The Traitors is one of the most thrilling shows around and the BBC will be following up on the latest UK series with more from Australia, New Zealand and the US, with all of this treachery to be available across 2024 on BBC iPlayer.”
The deal comes in the same week that NBCUniversal Latin America acquired the first season of the US version of The Traitors.
