Newen Studios has taken control of Kubik Films, the Spanish producer behind La Zona and Crematario.

The deal comes two years after TF1 Group-owned Newen took a minority stake in Kubik Films, which was founded in 2016 by Alberto and Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo.

They have been behind feature film La Noche De Los Girasoles and written for shows such as Gran Hotel, Velvet and Bajo Sospecha.

La Zona was produced for Movistar+ and marked Kubik’s first wholly produced show, while an as-yet unreleased six-parter is in post for a global streamer.

Financial details have not been revealed but the acquisition is part of Newen Studios’ ongoing strategy to expand into Spanish-speaking territories, following its deal for Izen Group in 2021.

Izen produces more than 2,000 hours each year, hosting labels including Zebra Producciones, BocaBoca, EuroTV Producciones, Hill Valley and Proima Zebrastur, IndaloYMedia, Capa Espana and Newco.

The company is also present in Latin America with Cacao Productions, a joint venture created with Argentine producer Non Stop.

Philippe Levasseur, head of international at Newen Studios, said: “Over the past two years, Alberto, Jorge, and the Newen Studios teams have developed very strong bonds. The company has delivered on all its promises, thanks to the creativity and solid presence of Alberto, Jorge, and their team in the Spanish creative community.”

The Sánchez-Cabezudo brothers added: “Our goal is to continue developing ambitious projects with international appeal, and for that, we are confident that we have the best partners for the journey ahead.”
