Netflix extends gameshow ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ into second season

Netflix has ordered a second season of high-profile gameshow, Squid Game: The Challenge.

The show, whose first season is set to end this month, features 456 characters playing the games from the series in a bid to win a top prize of $4.56m.

It was first unveiled last year and is produced by All3media’s Studio Lambert and ITV Studios-owned The Garden, with filming taking place in the UK.

Netflix gave the official greenlight to a second season of the original drama Squid Game, last year. The first run became its most-watched series of all time, pulling in 1.65 billion hours of viewing in the first month after its September 2021 release.

The Siren Pictures-produced series is based around a sinister and violent contest in which people facing deep financial trouble risk their lives by playing deadly children’s games to win a huge cash sum.

Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of nonfiction series, said: “There was no red light in our decision to green light season two of Squid Game: The Challenge, the most ambitious unscripted show we’ve premiered.

“We’re so excited to continue the franchise of Squid Game with our team in Korea, and producers at Studio Lambert and The Garden for this epic competition series.”

Contestant recruitment is currently underway.

Netflix has expanded its Squid Game universe since the show’s unexpected success, launching a live Squid Game: The Trials experience in LA this minth while an upcoming video game is in the works.
