Sony’s anime streamer Crunchyroll strikes global deal with Prime Video

Horimiya

Sony’s anime streamer Crunchyroll is to launch on Prime Video around the world, with a roll-out in the US, the UK, Sweden and Canada set for later this week.

The service offers 46,000 episodes and is available ad-free via the Fan and Mega Fan subscriptions (the latter allowing titles to be downloaded), with prices starting at $7.99.

Additional country roll-outs will follow throughout 2024, following the launch in North America, Sweden and the UK.

The streamer offers shows ranging from Horimiya and Code Geass to fantasy adventure Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, the long-running One Piece and action series Jujutsu Kaisen.

The Prime Video deal marks the latest expansion for Crunchyroll following a streaming channel deal with Sony sibling US cablenet GSN (Game Show Network) earlier this month.

Crunchyroll claims customers in more than 200 territories and is a joint venture between US-based Sony Pictures Entertainment and Japan’s Aniplex, itself a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment.

Sony struck a $1.2bn deal to acquire Crunchyroll from AT&T in early 2021 and merged it with rival anime streamer Funimation the following year to create a streamer that currently boasts more than 10 million paid subscribers.
