Paramount+ drives vehicular action-comedy ‘Twisted Metal’ to Canada
Paramount+ has acquired video game adaptation Twisted Metal for Canada.
The action-comedy, based on the PlayStation game series and commissioned for Peacock in the US, will launch all 10 episodes exclusively on the service in Canada on 10 August, with the streamer also set to debut the show in other as-yet unannounced territories.
Written by Michael Jonathan Smith and hailing from Sony Pictures Television, Universal Television and Sony-owned PlayStation Productions, who previously partnered on HBO mega-hit The Last Of Us, the series follows a smart-ass amnesiac milkman who hits the throttle as he faces an onslaught of savage vehicular combat while trying to deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Anthony Mackie (The Falcon And The Winter Soldier) stars as John Doe, the milkman who talks as fast as he drives, alongside Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine Nine) and Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man: No Way Home).
Mackie also exec produces via Make It With Gravy Productions alongside show creators Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Will Arnett and Marc Forman for Electric Avenue, Jason Spire for Inspire Entertainment, Peter Principato for Artists First, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions and Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios. The series director is Kitao Sakurai, while the show is distributed globally by Sony Pictures Television.
Earlier this year, Keith Le Goy, chairman of worldwide distribution and networks at Sony Pictures Entertainment, told TBI that the firm has been seeing “a lot of buzz” around the show, which has already sold to SonyLIV in India, TVNZ in New Zealand, Stan in Australia, BeIN in the Middle East, HBO & HBO Max in CEE and MNET’s Showmax, for sub-Saharan Africa.
“Twisted Metal delivers high-octane blockbuster summer movie energy episode after episode,” said Doug Craig, SVP of Content Strategy and Acquisitions at Paramount+. “From top to bottom, this series is a wild ride that delivers with talent and story that showcases the premium content Paramount+ viewers can expect from the service.”
