We Are Lady Parts alumna Raisah Ahmed has partnered with Scottish indie Freedom Scripted on an adaptation of Martin Sixsmith’s book, Ayesha’s Gift.

The six-part drama is based on a true story that follows British businesswoman Ayesha Rahman as she tracks down the truth behind her father’s death.

Rahman does not believe claims that he committed suicide while visiting family back in Pakistan and instead explores the case with investigative journalist Sixsmith, having had no help from the UK or Pakistani authorities.

Freedom Scripted’s MD Mike Ellen is executive producing with Ahmed and Sixsmith, who was behind The Lost Child Of Philomena, which was subsequently turned into the 2013 film.

Ahmed said: “Ayesha and Martin’s story is one of grief, family, and a country still grappling with corrupt systems created by the echoes of colonisation and partition.

“Having the opportunity to explore the legacy of migration and the complexities of family with Martin’s rich and powerful book is a dream. It feels like a real privilege to have the opportunity to bring Ayesha and Martin to screen with the team at Freedom Scripted and Martin Sixsmith.”
